If you've shopped for wooden furniture recently, you've probably seen "teak wood" advertised everywhere - but not all teak is created equal, and not everything labelled "teak" is genuine solid teak at all. Here's what to actually look for.
1. Check the Grain Pattern
Genuine teak has a distinctive straight, slightly wavy grain with a golden-brown to deep brown colour. Cheaper substitutes or veneer-covered wood often have an unnaturally uniform, printed-looking grain.
2. Weight Matters
Solid teak is dense and noticeably heavy for its size. If a "teak" sofa frame or table feels unusually light, it may be built from a lighter wood core with a teak veneer or laminate finish over it.
3. Look at the Joints
Genuine solid wood furniture typically uses traditional joinery - mortise-and-tenon or dovetail joints - rather than relying purely on screws, staples, or adhesive. Well-made teak furniture should feel solid with no visible gaps at the joints.
4. Ask Where the Wood is Sourced
Nilambur, in Kerala, is one of the most respected sources of plantation teak in India, valued for its density and durability. A furniture maker confident in their material should be able to tell you clearly where their wood comes from.
5. Smell and Feel the Finish
Genuine teak has a natural, faint oily smell (teak contains natural oils that help resist moisture and pests) and a smooth, slightly waxy feel once finished - very different from the flat, plasticky feel of laminated or veneered surfaces.
6. Price is a Signal, Not Proof
Genuine solid teak furniture costs more to produce than engineered wood or veneered alternatives - largely because of material cost and the labour involved in traditional joinery. A price that seems too good for "solid teak" claims is worth double-checking.
